Our History

An Edoid ethnic group, the Edo or Benin people are mostly located in Edo State in the southern region of Nigeria. They are descended from the Benin Empire’s founders and speak the Edo language. They are closely related to other linguistic ethnic groups that include the Esan, Afemai, Isoko, and Urhobo who also speak Edoid languages

Sculptures, plaques, and masks that are easily recognised represent various spiritual and historical facets of traditional Edo culture. The Queen Mother Idia’s mask and the enormous collection of historical Edo artworks known as the Benin Bronzes, which can be found not only in Nigeria but also scattered throughout the rest of the world, including in museums like New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, are two examples of notable Edo artworks.
